News Magazine Editor and Communications Specialist
(Professional Services – Executive Assistant)

The Executive Assistant is a Staff Officer responsible for assisting members and Locals, working with committees, and developing and administering Federation programs, services, and policies. 

The successful candidate will meet many of the following criteria.  The candidate has:

  • experience in the development, editing, and production of a professional magazine;
  • experience in working with national, provincial, and local media contacts;
  • experiencein the development and implementation of a public media campaign;
  • experience with the integration of social media in an overall communication strategy;
  • superior oral and written communication skills;
  • a practical knowledge of the operation of a provincial teachers’ federation or union;
  • a commitment to maintaining high quality publicly funded education.

The prime responsibility in this role will be the development, editing, and production of the ETFO Voice, the Federation’s professional magazine distributed to 76,000 members.  The successful candidate will, in partnership with other professional staff, ensure the effective communication of Federation policies and positions through print and electronic media to members, education stakeholders, and the public. Role responsibilities will include the development of policy and the development and administration of programs for members. Candidates shall have a clearly defined philosophy of the role of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario within the Ontario education community and be prepared to undertake such additional duties as may be determined by the General Secretary.

Preferred qualifications of candidates include:

  • five years of successful experience in the production of a professional magazine or newsletter;
  • skill in the use of digital photography;
  • fluency in written and oral French;
  • a university degree.

The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario
invites applications for the position of
Administrative Assistant, Equity and Women’s Services
 
This is a contract position, effective immediately, to April, 2012, with a possible extension.
 
Duties:
 
Provide senior administrative support, including, but not limited to:
  • preparation of correspondence, reports, minutes, program documents, etc. (including design where required);
  • preparation of materials for workshops, courses, conferences, etc.
  • Answer/screen telephone calls in a courteous, professional, and timely manner ensuring confidentiality of conversations and information;
  • Other duties as assigned by the Manager or designate;
  • Administrative responsibilities including reviewing and finalizing correspondence and various Federation reports. 
 
Skills required for this position include, but are not limited to:
  • Outstanding interpersonal, written and verbal communication, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to multi-task, thrive in a fast-paced environment, adapt quickly to change, and develop new skills.
  • Ability to communicate positively with staff members, political, and organizational representatives, while maintaining a high level of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Advanced computer skills, including Office 2010 (Outlook, Access, Excel, Word, PowerPoint), with proof of successful completion of post- secondary computer based courses and/or programs.
 
Annual Salary Scale:
  • $52,631 - $66,635, plus full benefits. The successful candidate will become a member of the ETFO Support Staff Association and will be covered by the collective agreement, where applicable.

  • demonstrated leadership in the development and delivery of a wide variety of professional learning opportunities for early learning programs;
  • extensive experience in initiating and administering system-wide professional learning programs;
  • experience and expertise in the development of professional resources for teachers;
  • demonstrated expertise and commitment to ensuring equity in student achievement;
  • superior oral and written communication skills;
  • a practical knowledge of the operation of a provincial teachers’ federation;
  • a commitment to maintaining high quality publicly funded education.
 
Role responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the development of policy and the development and administration of professional learning programs for early learning teams.  The role will have a focus on the creation of professional development programs, the development of professional resources, the development and administration of professional growth programs, and the administration of conferences, with a focus on the early years. Candidates shall have a clearly defined philosophy of the role of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario within the Ontario education community and be prepared to undertake such duties as may be determined by the General Secretary.
 
Preferred qualifications of candidates include:
 
  • a broad range of Federation involvement;  
  • a Certificate of Qualification to teach in Ontario;
  • a university degree;     
  • five years of successful employment experience.
