The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) joins calls from Assembly of First Nations National Chief Perry Bellegarde that Conservative Senator Lynn Beyak should resign or be expelled from caucus by the Conservative Leader.
“Senator Beyak has had ample time to demonstrate a basic understanding of Indigenous peoples since her appalling comments on residential schools,” said President Sam Hammond. “To continue to promote blatantly untrue information such as denying the citizenship of Indigenous peoples in Canada is inexcusable,” he said.
ETFO is committed to the recommendations made by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The Federation’s work includes developing curriculum resources and other materials for educators from Kindergarten to Grade 8 that introduce First Nations, Métis and Inuit histories and realities in age-appropriate ways.
The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario represents 78,000 elementary public school teachers and education professionals across the province and is the largest teacher federation in Canada.
