Criteria for Committees
As stated in the ETFO Constitution, Article X, Provincial Organization, Section 3 Committees, 10.3.1, ETFO has a number of standing committees.
Criteria for the Selection of Standing Committee Members
- Skills and experiences that relate to the work of the committee.
- Involvement or experience with issues associated with the work of the committee.
- Involvement on standing committees.
- Involvement in community organizations.
- Involvement in the local.
- Involvement in the provincial Federation.
- Membership on each committee will be limited to one member per local (where possible).
- Priority for participation on standing committees will be given to active members. Active membership in ETFO is maintained by an occasional teacher who has paid a fee in the prior 60 working days.
- Members’ participation on standing committees will be limited to one committee per year.
- Selection for participation on standing committees will be inclusive and reflect the diversity of ETFO.
Application Criteria
- It is important that these committees represent the authentic voice of that constituency. Members applying for any of the following standing committees, are required to self-identify. [Aboriginal Education; Anti-Racist Education; Disability Issues; Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Members; Men’s Focus, Status of Women].
- Applicants for the New Members Committee should have less than five years’ teaching/education work experience.
- Applicants for the Occasional Teacher Committee should be occasional teachers.
- Applicants for the Occupational Health and Safety Committee should have certification from the Workers’ Health and Safety Centre.
- Applicants for the Teacher Education/Faculty Liaison Committee should have knowledge/experience of Bachelor of Education programming in Ontario and live/work near a faculty of education.
- Applicants are encouraged to identify their bilingual (English/French) status. (A minimum of two (2) members of the International Assistance Committee must be bilingual).
The ETFO website contains all information concerning the standing committee application process. The deadline for committee application is March 1st.
Members will be appointed to a standing committee for a two-year term by the ETFO Executive. Members may serve up to two consecutive terms on a committee, if re-appointed. Upon completion of two consecutive terms on any standing committee, a break in service of at least one year is required prior to appointment to any standing committee. Notwithstanding, members of the Teacher Education/Faculty Liaison Committee may be re-appointed for an additional two-year term immediately following two consecutive terms.
Committees meet twice during the school year. Committee chairs are selected by committee members at the first meeting of the committee.
Committees may make recommendations for changes to the terms of reference for the subsequent year at the May Executive meeting.
Roles of Committees
It is recognized that the standing committees of the Federation are an invaluable asset for ensuring that the expertise of our members and the richness of their work experiences become an integral part of the design and development of Federation programs and services. It will be the role of standing committees:
- To develop policy recommendations for consideration by the Executive and Annual Meeting.
- To develop program recommendations for consideration by the Executive and the Annual Meeting.
- To provide the perspective of the member on Federation initiatives and programs.
- To provide advice on the content, delivery, and design of Federation programs.
- To advise the Executive on matters relating to the work of the committee.
- To liaise when appropriate with other ETFO standing committees.
Appointment Terms
Members will be appointed to standing committees by the Executive for a twoyear term. Members may serve up to two consecutive terms on a committee, if re-appointed. Upon completion of two consecutive terms on any standing committee, a break in service of at least one year is required prior to appointment to any standing committee.
