Call For a Comprehensive Ban on Asbestos ETFO is one of 60 signatories in a letter sent to Prime Minister Trudeau on December 6, 2016 calling for a comprehensive ban on asbestos in Canada. The signatories, led by the Canadian Environmental Law Association, have urged that an expert review panel to address ongoing challenges associated with asbestos management and disposal across Canada be established to achieve the ban. The letter cites that asbestos related diseases in Canada are increasing. New cases of mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer caused by exposure in the workplace, increased from 335 cases in 2000 to 580 cases in 2013. Other asbestos-induced diseases include lung cancers and asbestosis, the latter with estimates of at least 1900 new cases annually. The letter to the Prime Minister is available in both PDF and Word format.
