ETFO Honours Arnprior’s Sue Diotte with Humanitarian Award
A ‘Guardian Angel’ Providing Scholarship, Safety Awareness for Students
August 17, 2010
TORONTO - The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) today honoured Arnprior’s Sue Diotte with its Humanitarian Award. This award is granted to an individual or a group of individuals who do not hold Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) membership but have given outstanding service to education and/or the community.
Sue was nominated for the award by Arnprior District Secondary School educational assistants, who have called her an “all round amazing woman”. When Sue lost her 16-year old daughter Sarah in a tragic car accident in 2001, she set up a scholarship fund in Sarah’s memory. Called the “Yellow Butterfly Fund”, it is given to a student who has a passion for writing and pursuing writing in their post-secondary studies. The graduate must also show compassion, determination and have the desire for personal growth.
As a member of MADD, Sue participates in all the pre-prom assemblies at Arnprior Secondary to raise awareness about drinking and driving. She’s also on the Safe Schools Committee and gives class presentations to raise awareness about different kinds of bullying.
Sue runs a Leisure Lounge at the school, which is a place where students with Autism Spectrum can go and relax, socialize and play a variety of games. Sue is very involved with the school’s Gay Straight Alliance that supports the inclusion and awareness of sexuality in the school environment.
At a moment’s notice, Sue is also prepared to come into the school if there is a student who needs counselling or someone to talk to about the grief they could be struggling with.
“The amount of caring and responsibility that Sue has taken on for her community of students in Arnprior is inspiring,” said ETFO President Sam Hammond. “She is truly a guardian angel whom we’re proud to recognize with this award.”
The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario represents 76,000 elementary public school teachers and education workers across the province and is the largest teacher federation in Canada.
