ETFO poster features six "Great Canadian Women of 2006"
Ontario public elementary teachers will be acknowledging the contributions of women to Canadian society as they celebrate "Women’s History Month" this October.
"This is a time for all of us to reflect on the accomplishments of Canadian women in such areas as politics, workers’ rights, anti-violence, anti-racism, and gender equity," said Emily Noble, president of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO). "Through their efforts, these extraordinary women are ensuring a more equitable Canadian society that benefits men and women alike."
To celebrate Women’s History Month, ETFO asked each of its locals to nominate up to three distinguished women for their contributions in their community, particularly in areas that support diversity and improve the quality of life for girls and women.
Six of those nominated were chosen as "Great Canadian Women of 2006". These women and their accomplishments are celebrated in a poster that ETFO produced in collaboration with the Women’s Future Fund. Posters were sent to every public elementary school and to ETFO partner organizations across the province.
While ETFO has sponsored a "Women’s History Month" poster in conjunction with Women’s History Network in past years, this year’s poster is the first to be developed in collaboration with ETFO locals to reflect women in their communities.
Established in 1992 by the Government of Canada, "Women’s History Month" provides Canadians with an opportunity to learn more about women’s historic contributions to Canadian society.
The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario represents 70,000 public elementary school teachers and education workers across Ontario and is the largest teacher federation in Canada.
