Elementary Teachers Donate $10,000 for Somalia Relief
August 18, 2011
(TORONTO) More than 800 delegates attending the Annual Meeting of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) voted today to donate $10,000 for Somalian relief.
“The famine in Somalia has killed tens of thousands and another 10 million are at risk, so it is incumbent on all of us to act,” said ETFO President Sam Hammond as the Federation’s Annual Meeting came to a close.
The food crisis in Somalia is the worst humanitarian crisis to hit that country. It has been abetted by the worst drought in 60 years.
ETFO‘s Humanity Fund continues a track record in responding to world crises. Along with annual donations to the Stephen Lewis Foundation, the fund has provided funds to Pakistani flood relief and to Japanese earthquake and tsunami relief within the past year.
The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario represents 76,000 elementary public school teachers and education professionals across the province and is the largest teacher federation in Canada.
