...and still we rise 2015
Celebrating Women's Union Leadership
ETFO launched its 2015 …and still we rise conference with a dinner to celebrate the amazing union leadership by women in the education sector and across the labour movement. Over 400 ETFO members attended the conference, which had as its theme this year "A woman's place is in her union."
The participants and 24 women leaders of national, provincial and local unions were welcomed by ETFO First Vice-President Susan Swackhammer. A short and moving video featuring the work of each of the leaders was prepared by ETFO:
Today there are powerful women in every facet of our workplaces, our unions and in social justice movements in Canada and abroad. For women who are leaders in the trade union movement, their ascent is not just about attaining power. It’s about creating movements for changing society and creating an economic and social fabric that values working people, that values diversity and that values social justice and equity for all.
Dr. Naila Keleta-Mae provided the opening keynote. An assistant professor at the University of Waterloo, she tied together the ideas of women, leadership and transformation.
