Union School 2012-2013

The Union School is a leadership program for local ETFO leaders. To be eligible, participants must be members in good standing, and on a local Executive or Committee. The 35 participants work with ETFO staff, legal counsel, facilitators, and Harvard university professor, Dr. Elaine Bernard, as they complete an intensive year-long program. The first session was held October 28-30th.

ETFO First-Vice President, Susan Swackhammer, welcomed the participants and congratulated them on taking this important step in their leadership journey.

During the USchool program the candidates work in teams for the year. As a team building activity we have them select a team name. This team is presenting their team name.

This group, the Jay Walkers, share their team artifact--the tie their server was wearing at dinner the evening before! They used the tie as a metaphor for their coming together as a group and ETFO was the tie that held them together.

This group, the Typhoon, present their group name. Hurricane Sandy may have played a small part in the creation of THIS identity!

Harvard University Professor, Dr. Elaine Bernard, opened the session by talking to the participants about the attack on unions and the public sector.

ETFO staff member, Nancy Baldree, leads the group in an initial discussion about their practicum project to be completed in their local.

One of the highlights of the program is having the ETFO Vice-Presidents talk to the participants about their own personal leadership journeys.

Groups were given a reading to do prior to the first session. One of the activities was the present their information to the rest of the group.

One of the leadership styles discussed was the visionary leader.

ETFO Staff member, Carol Zavitz, explores issues of identity and how assumptions about identity can impact on how we interact with one another.
