Ensuring Equity for Elementary Students
A submission to the Education Equality Task Force
September 23, 2002
ETFO has highlighted areas where the funding formula must be changed to close the gap between our current reality and what our elementary students need. The brief outlines ways to improve the funding model that could make a difference that will last a lifetime.
ETFO is calling for
- smaller class sizes
- more specialist programs and teachers
- more equity and flexibility
"There is a significant disparity between what is needed for a high quality elementary education and what is being funded. In order to ensure that all Ontario's children are given the best start in life, this gap must be closed. Elementary education must be better funded. Now is the time for bold action. We can't use the excuses of affordability when it comes to educating our students. Now is the time to strengthen their foundation by restoring funding and injecting new funding into our schools. If we fail, history may prove a harsh judge."
