New Publication: More Than a Play
More Than A Play is a collection of nine short plays, written by Canada’s foremost playwrights, exploring equity and social justice issues.
During ETFO’s Education and Poverty projects, the award-winning play, Danny, King of the Basement by David S. Craig, was used as a catalyst for teacher professional development to educate members and in turn, the broader community about the reality of poverty in our schools. Nominated schools facing socio-economic challenges in every board across Ontario were given a classroom set of "Danny" scripts to use in their classroom. Over and over again, ETFO heard from its members how wonderful it was to have copies of these scripts to use in their literacy block and classroom.
More Than A Play was developed to provide Junior/Intermediate grades with more lively and accessible plays. Key questions and follow-up activities have been created by Ontario educators to support critical thinking about issues of social justice and equity. Each play delves into the complexities of eliminating intolerance and prejudice in our world, and is guaranteed to generate meaningful and engaging classroom discussions. Three plays have also been translated into French to support French language learning.
This book was made possible by the generous support of the Equity and Inclusive Education Branch of the Ontario Ministry of Education and supports the government’s key education priorities which include a positive school environment where diversity is respected, systemic barriers and biases are identified and discussed so that all students can achieve their highest potential. This strategy, the first of its kind in Canada, is important to all children and youth in our schools.
