Classroom Activities
Read the story. Observe the paintings.
On a page entitled “Black History and the Underground Railroad” list new
information that you learned from this book. Compare to other sources. At the
bottom of the page, write a paragraph telling how you feel when you read and
think about the injustice that happened.
Use
the
Bloom of the Whole Self,
model
found in Year Round Resources to do a co-operative character study of Clara
telling about her special strengths and skills. Discuss whether the white
plantation owners saw any of these qualities in Clara. How do bias and
discrimination close some people's eyes to the whole picture?
Identify characteristics of healthy relationships and the need to be free of
bias and discrimination in order to form them.
Work on strategies to face challenges (conflicting opinions, bias) in
relationships with family and friends.
Read other quilt stories. Tell how the quilts relate to the heritages of the
people in the stories.
Create a map from your home to a place of your choice. Now create a patchwork
(paper) quilt using picture codes to hide the important clues. Discuss colour,
line, shape, form, shape and texture. Is this an easy job? Why? Share your
creation with friends to see if they can decipher your codes?
Draw a planning diagram to show the perimeter and area of your quilt. How many
quilting pieces will you use to cover the area? What dimensions will each quilt
patch be? Explain how you calculated your answer in a Math journal.
