Executive Update

April 29 - May 2, 2013 Executive Meeting, Toronto
The Martin Aboriginal Education Initiative
The Executive has extended support to the Martin Aboriginal Education Initiative (MAEI) in pursuance of the goal of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario to improve education for all Aboriginal students and provide them with the opportunities they need to succeed.
The MAEI implements initiatives that improve education at the elementary and secondary levels for all Aboriginal Canadian. It brings together Aboriginal organizations, schools and educational institutions, and other community partners to implement programs to support Aboriginal students. ETFO has been lobbying the federal government through CTF for several years on the inequities of funding elementary and secondary education for on-reserve students. MAEI has acknowledged this funding discrepancy and has created programming with other community partners to support the long-term success of Aboriginal students.
Resource for LGBT Members
ETFO will develop a pamphlet/resource to support and advise Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) members on issues such as coming out, transitioning, supports, and rights. The need for such a resource was identified during focus groups conducted among the LGBT members of the Federation. The resource will provide a reference summary of the rights of LGBT members, the pros and cons of coming out, and the services provided by ETFO to address LGBT concerns and issues. The resource would also outline the longer-term steps that ETFO is taking to create work environments that are free of homophobia and transphobia, including the LGBT member strategy and work on a new Trans policy for ETFO.
ETFO Bursaries
The Executive has increased the number of bursaries available to members under the ETFO Bursaries- Women’s Program and ETFO Member Bursaries in view of the high number of applicants seeking the award. Up to eight awards, of $625 each, will now be available each year to members under these bursaries instead of up to four awards of $1250. The majority of applicants for these two bursaries need assistance to take an additional qualification course and the revised awards, while being adequate, will benefit significantly more members.
ETFO ICT Conference
The Executive approved the participation of 20 more members in the ETFO ICT Conference: Innovative Creative Teaching Through Technology, in view of the overwhelming response received for the June 7-8, 2013 conference. The focus of the conference is on implementation of various technological tools in the classrooms.
