Niagara teacher Mark Gunning wins ETFO Award for Children’s Literature

August 14, 2018

The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) has presented Niagara member Mark Gunning with its 2018 Children’s Literature Award for his book entitled I Told You So! The Adventures of William and Thomas.

The award is presented to a member or non-member to recognize published quality children’s literature that is in keeping with ETFO’s positions on social justice and equity.

A teacher at Heximer Public School in Niagara Falls, Mark’s first self-published book is designed to get the attention of reluctant readers in the junior grades. I Told You So consists of high interest short stories involving the adventures of two young boys. William is the mastermind behind the plans and Thomas is the voice of reason as they embark on a series of adventures.

With book illustrations provided by Kathy Goodwin, the boys find inventive ways to remove model airplanes from trees and beehives from houses and create fake snow in summer. Meant to be light-hearted and fun, Mark has followed up his first effort with a second book called

I Told You So! The Journey Continues.

“It’s the pride of every teacher to have their students discover the joy of reading. Mark has gone further by providing young kids with a book that’s written to be entertaining and engaging,” said ETFO President Sam Hammond.

The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario represents 83,000 elementary public school teachers, occasional teachers and education professionals across the province. ETFO’s Building Better Schools education agenda can be viewed at buildingbetterschools.ca.
