A Message from The President: Tragedy in Haiti
People from around the world have been shocked by the horrific tragedy that continues to unfold in Haiti.
More than 100,000 Haitians have perished and thousands more have suffered life-threatening injuries following the most severe earthquake to hit the island in 200 years.
Survivors are without medical aid and in desperate need of food, water, and shelter. There is an urgent need for humanitarian aid from the world community.
The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario responded quickly with an initial disaster relief donation of $10,000 to The Canadian Red Cross from the ETFO Humanity Fund. This was immediately followed by the approval of a $5,000.00 donation to Global Medic by provincial Executive.
At its February meeting, your provincial Executive also committed to match donations made by ETFO locals (up to $60,000). These funds will be donated to Education International to support the rebuilding of Haiti's education system.
To date, ETFO locals have donated $56,935 to various charities in support of Haitian relief and rebuilding efforts. With previous provincial donations and matching funds, along with a $4,000 donation by provincial office staff to the Canadian Red Cross and Médecins Sans Frontières, this brings total ETFO donations to $132,870.
Elementary teachers are known for their humanitarian support of people in need, both here in Canada and abroad. I urge our 73,000 members to again open their hearts, and their wallets, and contribute to this urgent cause.
Donations can be made to the Canadian Red Cross at www.redcross.ca and Doctors Without Borders/ Médecins Sans Frontières at www.msf.ca.
You can also contact the Canadian Red Cross at 1-800-418-1111 and Doctors Without Borders at 1-800-982-7903.
Please help. This tragedy in Haiti cries out for an immediate response.
Sam Hammond,
ETFO President
