TORONTO, ON – Today, on World Teachers’ Day, the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) joins people around the globe in recognizing and celebrating teachers for their outstanding commitment to the development, success and well-being of students. 

“Throughout the COVID-19 crisis, ETFO members have shown great leadership and care, working to address the devastating impacts the pandemic has had on communities, especially on those who are marginalized,” says ETFO President Karen Brown. “As the heartbeat of public education, teachers offered hope, guidance and stability so that all students could persevere, learn and be well. We thank them, and those who support them, for inspiring, uplifting and celebrating every student.”

World Teachers’ Day, held annually on October 5, commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. World Teachers’ Day is co-convened in partnership with UNICEF, the International Labour Organization, and Education International.

Adds Brown, "World Teachers’ Day provides a reminder that teachers play one of the most important roles in a child's growth and development. Every day, they use their professional judgement and expertise to make critical decisions about appropriate lessons and resources. Their goal is to provide equitable, high-quality education for every student."
