ETFO President Sam Hammond
Sam Hammond is serving his third term as president of the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO).
First elected to provincial Executive in August 2003, Sam served as vice-president from 2004-2007, and as first vice-president from 2007-2009. He was elected ETFO president in 2009.
Sam has 20 years of elementary teaching experience as a physical education and health specialist. As a teacher with the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board, he taught all grade levels from Junior Kindergarten to grade eight.
From 1998-2004, Sam was the chief negotiator and grievance officer for the Hamilton-Wentworth Teacher Local, and held this key position during a difficult 17-day strike/lockout in October 2000.
A sociology and history major, he holds a B.A. (Hon.) from McMaster University as well as a B.Ed. from Brock University.
Sam taught additional qualification courses in physical education and health, and in risk management, at the Brock University Faculty of Education for eight years. He also taught English as a second language in the South Pacific Islands for a year while travelling through the South Central Pacific.
Sam is a social, political, and union activist. He has worked on municipal, provincial, and federal political campaigns.
