This annual observance first declared by the United Nations in 1992 aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights, and well-being of persons with disabilities.

ETFO resources and initiatives that are designed for use with students, educators, and union leadership to educate and raise awareness of disability and universal access issues can be used in conjunction with this day and throughout the year.

ETFO's Access Without Borders

This initiative is designed to raise awareness around disability issues and to provide strategies and recommendations for combating physical, informational, and attitudinal barriers. Launched in September 2007, this campaign includes teacher resources on inclusive education, a workshop, and ETFO’s protocol document on accessible meeting spaces.
