This counter graphic represents only one of the gaps that exist between the working conditions of teachers in the elementary and secondary school systems. Elementary teachers get far less preparation time than secondary school teachers, and that results in elementary teachers having 35 minutes less time every day for lesson preparation, marking, and student assessment. Over the course of a school year, it adds up.
Last spring, new four-year collective agreements were signed for the period from September 1, 2008 until August 31, 2012. In that round of bargaining, a major goal endorsed by ETFO's locals was to close the gap between elementary and secondary school working conditions. While significant improvements to elementary working conditions were achieved, secondary teachers still enjoy superior preparation, assessment and supervision time. In the coming years, more work will need to be done to fully close this gap.
In 2007, ETFO launched a multi-year campaign to Close the Gap between elementary and secondary school funding. Please click here to read more about this important issue. And check back for further news, information and research on the funding gap.
Better working conditions for teachers means a better education for students.
