ETFO Starts Strike Action In Lambton Kent
February 6, 2006
The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) has initiated strike action against the Lambton Kent District School Board, this morning.
Last Wednesday, as the union began strike action against the Simcoe County District School Board, it also issued a bulletin asking teachers to refrain from accepting employment with either the Simcoe County District School Board or the Lambton Kent District School Board as substitute teachers.
"Every board that has been 'pink listed' and is now faced with a withdrawal of services has an expired contract. The new contracts that we are negotiating must have better job security, better wages and better working conditions," said Emily Noble, president, Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO).
"Last week, the Renfrew County District School Board ratified a tentative agreement with ETFO. The new collective agreement is a significant improvement over the last agreement and it covers the bases that I am talking about. If a board the size of Renfrew County is up for the challenge then there is no excuse for the larger school boards not being able to cut a deal.
"Job security means that occasional teachers who decided to pursue permanent teaching employment have a reasonable chance in the hiring process. Too many of our members who have provided years of outstanding service are being ignored at hiring time.
"The daily rate of pay is absolutely a top priority. If you can only be called to work for a few days each week then that rate of pay becomes extremely important.
"Boards who do not have contracts with our occasional teacher locals do not recognize the vital role these professionals play in keeping the education system functioning", said Noble.
Collective agreements for elementary occasional teachers expired on August 31, 2004.
The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario represents 70,0000 elementary school teachers and education workers across Ontario and is the largest teacher federation in Canada outside of Quebec.
