Elementary Substitute Teachers Hit The Bricks On Monday
May 5, 2006
Public elementary substitute teachers, members of the Durham Occasional Teacher Local, and the Trillium Lakelands Occasional Teacher Local of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO), will be on strike Monday May 8, 2006. The Near North Occasional Teacher Local will begin its strike on Tuesday May 9, 2006.
Negotiations are scheduled only for the Near North on Monday. ETFO notified the boards that work-to-rule actions graduate to full withdrawals of service next week.
"Not one of these boards has made an offer that they know has a chance of being accepted. What they are looking for is capitulation by Monday and that is not going to happen," said Emily Noble, ETFO President.
"ETFO is not looking to break new ground in any of these stalemates. The devil can be found in the details of the boards’ offers. ETFO will not accept language that treats occasional teachers differently than other teachers. New contracts must provide our current members with a real chance for more employment. This union will not entertain wage offers that are out of line with current settlements.
"Every one of these boards has the money required to close a deal. The working conditions that we need are also in the other agreements. If the 3 boards want to end this period of peace and stability let that be their choice. I am disappointed that they have chosen to return to an era of strikes.
"I will not authorize any contract that widely deviates from other settled agreements. Occasional teachers must be able to rely on a deal that has clear language so that boards don’t believe that they have free reign afterwards. I hope that all of the trustees at each board are aware of the reasons why there is no deal," Noble said.
The Durham Occasional Teacher Local represents 800 public elementary occasional teachers. The Near North Occasional Teacher Local represents 275 public elementary occasional teachers. The Trillium Lakelands Occasional Teacher Local represents 380 public elementary occasional teachers. Their contracts ended August 31, 2004.
The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario represents 70,000 public elementary teachers and education workers across Ontario and is the largest teacher federation in Canada outside of Quebec.
