The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) has presented former ETFO President Karen Brown with a 2026 Honorary Life Membership Award.
Honorary life memberships, the Federation’s highest form of recognition, are given to members from the education profession who have given outstanding service to the Federation at the provincial level or as a member of the provincial ETFO staff.
Before making history in 2021 as the first Black president of a provincial teacher affiliate union in Ontario and the first known in Canada, Brown served as ETFO’s first vice-president from 2015 to 2021 and joined the provincial Executive in 2009. She began teaching with the Toronto District School Board in 1993, is a registered early childhood educator, and holds degrees from Brock University and OISE.
At the provincial level, Brown chaired and served on several Federation standing committees and task forces. She served on the Canadian Labour Congress’ Women’s Advisory Committee, was a governor of the Ontario Teachers’ Federation, was a member of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists, and volunteered with the Canadian Alliance of Black Educators. Brown is also a supporter of the Ontario Alliance of Black School Educators.
Brown is a respected leader in Ontario education whose tenure as ETFO provincial president exemplified principled advocacy for public education. She also founded SMILE (Single Mothers Inspiring Leadership in Education) and continues to champion leadership opportunities for women and girls.
The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) has presented former Waterloo Occasional Teacher Local President Mary Karchemny with a 2026 Honorary Life Membership Award.
Honorary life memberships, the Federation’s highest form of recognition, are given to members from the education profession who have given outstanding service to the Federation at the provincial level or as a member of the provincial ETFO staff.
Karchemny is a lifelong union leader whose 50 year career shows her strong commitment to public education and educator advocacy in Ontario. She began as a teacher and principal before moving into provincial leadership, serving as district president of the Ontario Public School Teachers’ Federation (OPSTF) in Waterloo and on the OPSTF provincial executive and Ontario Teachers’ Federation Board of Governors from 1994-98. She later led the Waterloo Region Occasional Teachers’ Local from 2007-09 and remained on its executive for 14 more years.
Karchemny modernized her local by creating its first website, electronic newsletter, and permanent office, while strengthening governance, policy, and mentorship for new leaders. Her work helped guide OPSTF through its transition into ETFO and left a lasting organizational legacy. Since retiring in June 2024, she continues to mentor emerging leaders, support equitable education policies, and volunteer in her community, ensuring her experience continues to shape union leadership and member support across the province.
