Durham teacher David Mastin elected ETFO first vice-president

August 17, 2021

TORONTO, ON – Durham teacher David Mastin was elected first vice-president of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) at today’s Annual Meeting. Mastin has served as ETFO vice-president since 2019.

“We must defeat Ford in the 2022 provincial election to stifle any movement towards the privatization of public education, to fend off an imminent austerity agenda post-pandemic, and to create conditions for our success at the 2022 bargaining table,” says Mastin. “To achieve this, we must continue to educate, inspire and mobilize our 83,000 ETFO members, think and plan strategically while encouraging input from all levels, and build lasting alliances with parents, community organizations and the broader labour community.”

Mastin began his teaching career in 1995 with the Durham Board of Education (now Durham District School board) after graduating from the University of Toronto. Mastin has represented ETFO members both locally and provincially since 2002.

At the Durham Teacher Local, he served as local treasurer, secretary, political action chair, second vice-president and first vice-president, before being elected president in 2015. Mastin also served the local as chief negotiator, and member of the bargaining team and all local committees. In the community, he has volunteered as a ski patroller for the Canadian Ski Patrol System, holding a variety of leadership positions within Kawartha Zone.

Mastin was first elected to ETFO’s provincial Executive in 2013. At the provincial level, he has also served on the provincial Representative Council Selection Committee and was a past member of the Teacher Education Faculty Liaison Committee.

ETFO represents 83,000 elementary public school teachers, occasional teachers and education professionals across the province. Its Building Better Schools education agenda can be viewed at BuildingBetterSchools.ca.
