ETFO holds press conference to sound alarm on Bill 33, government overreach

October 20, 2025

TORONTO, ON – The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) will call out the Ford government’s latest attack on public education at Queen’s Park on October 21. Bill 33, combined with years of chronic underfunding, will deepen systemic inequities, erase parent and community voices, and erode the foundation of democracy.

Members of ETFO’s Provincial Executive will gather outside Queen’s Park at 12:30 p.m., joined by ETFO local leaders from across Ontario and representatives from other education unions. Together, we stand united against Bill 33 and demand a public education system that puts students and communities, not politics, at the centre.

ETFO will hold a press conference that afternoon to address the proposed legislation’s impact on Ontario’s public schools:

DATE: Tuesday, October 21, 2025

TIME: 1:30 to 2 p.m.

WHO: ETFO President David Mastin will be joined by:

  • Cindy Gangaram, President of the Hamilton-Wentworth Teacher Local
  • Chandra Pasma, NDP Education Critic and Member of Provincial Parliament
  • Stephen Skoutajan, President of the Ottawa-Carleton Teacher Local, whose school board is currently under Ministry of Education supervision

WHERE: Media Studio, Queen’s Park, Toronto

LIVESTREAM: Available via the Media Studio.

ETFO represents approximately 84,000 members, including public elementary teachers, occasional teachers, designated early childhood educators, education support personnel, and professional support personnel. Visit BuildingBetterSchools.ca
