ETFO statement on right to engage in peaceful protest

June 12, 2024

The following is a statement from the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO):

“ETFO stands with those who are exercising their right to engage in peaceful protest. As a labour organization, we recognize the historic and present power that non-violent demonstrations rooted in justice have in our society. The right to protest is intertwined with the freedoms of expression, association, and assembly, which must be protected. These rights and freedoms are essential to democratic societies.

ETFO prioritizes social justice in the areas of peace, anti-poverty, non-violence, and equity. The Federation strongly stands in support of any non-violent demonstration that advocates for a more peaceful, equitable, and non-violent society.”

ETFO represents approximately 83,000 members, including public elementary teachers, occasional teachers, designated early childhood educators, education support personnel, and professional support personnel. Visit
