Toronto teacher Michelle Reyes wins ETFO Arts and Culture Award
August 16, 2022
The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) has presented Michelle Reyes, a teacher with the Elementary Teachers of Toronto, with its 2022 Arts and Culture Award. This award recognizes an ETFO member or group of members for their involvement in arts and cultural activities for children in either the classroom or community.
Reyes was previously involved in the annual planning, creation and execution of various events during the Toronto Caribbean Carnival. For the past 10 years, she has created and performed as Queen for Louis Saldenah’s Carnival band. As the recipient of the Ontario Science Centre’s 2018 Innovation in Mas’ Award, Reyes’ costume was displayed at the centre. She also led a carnival costume design workshop for the Ontario Science Centre during Nuit Blanche, and mentored children participating in the Junior Carnival.
The vast majority of band leaders, mas designers/builders, and section leaders are men, while most carnival participants are women. Reyes’ leadership in this arts and culture event showcases women and the Caribbean culture in a positive, inviting way.
“Michelle’s artistry and creativity know no bounds. Her costumes demonstrate the beauty and strength of Caribbean culture and celebrate the arts in the most vibrant of ways,” says ETFO President Karen Brown. “Her innovation and inviting approach, and commitment to teaching in ways that connect adults and children with Caribbean culture, are worthy of recognition. Her efforts highlight the importance of sharing our identities in visible ways that deserve to be celebrated.”
ETFO represents approximately 83,000 members, including public elementary teachers, occasional teachers, designated early childhood educators, education support personnel, and professional support personnel. Visit BuildingBetterSchools.ca.
