Waterloo Region teacher Nathan Core re-elected as ETFO representative to Ontario Teachers’ Federation

August 16, 2023

Nathan Core, a teacher and president of the Waterloo Region Occasional Teacher Local, has been re-elected as the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) representative to the Ontario Teachers’ Federation (OTF). Core was first elected to the ETFO provincial Executive in 2015 and as OTF Table Officer in 2019.

“As the ETFO’s representative at the OTF executive table, I will continue to ensure actions are taken to safeguard public education and the teaching profession. I am committed to advocating for teachers' best interests, and believe that to achieve this, we must find commonality with ETFO affiliates to ensure public education remains a priority, push back on privatization, and develop awareness regarding the harms of charter schools and the downloading of educational responsibility to families,” says Core.

After obtaining a bachelor of education from the University of Windsor in 2007, Core taught internationally before becoming an occasional teacher with the Waterloo Region District School Board in 2010. He has been president of the Waterloo Region Occasional Teachers' Local since 2013 and has served on its Executive since 2011.

At the provincial level, Core was a member of the Regulation 274 Provincial Task Force, and a member of budget and selections committees. He has attended Annual Meetings since 2011, and received ETFO’s New Member Award in 2015.

Core has also been a governor of the OTF since 2017, an OTF executive member since 2019, and most recently served as OTF President in 2022-2023.

ETFO represents approximately 83,000 members, including public elementary teachers, occasional teachers, designated early childhood educators, education support personnel, and professional support personnel. Visit BuildingBetterSchools.ca.
