ETFO celebrates World Teachers’ Day
October 05, 2026
TORONTO, ON – On October 5, World Teachers’ Day, the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) recognizes the expertise and extraordinary commitment of teachers in Ontario and around the world.
“Ontario’s teachers are the driving force behind strong public education. Every day, they bring expertise, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to students,” says ETFO President David Mastin. “On World Teachers’ Day, we celebrate their extraordinary contributions and reaffirm our responsibility to ensure they have the resources, supports, and conditions necessary to help every learner thrive.”
ETFO is encouraging Ontarians to reflect on the teachers who have shaped their lives and to join the call for meaningful investment in public education. Mastin adds, “If we want teachers and students to succeed, the Ford government must act. That means reducing class sizes, expanding and strengthening supports for all students, especially those with special education needs, addressing the rise in violence in schools, advancing equity and inclusion, and tackling the recruitment and retention crisis that is leaving classrooms without qualified educators.”
World Teachers’ Day, celebrated annually on October 5, commemorates the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. It highlights the vital role teachers play in building inclusive, high-quality education systems. It is jointly organized in partnership with UNICEF, the International Labour Organization, and Education International.
ETFO represents approximately 84,000 members, including public elementary teachers, occasional teachers, designated early childhood educators, education support personnel, and professional support personnel. Visit BuildingBetterSchools.ca.
